August Reads

Monday, September 8, 2014

August was a pretty slow reading month for me since we had so much going on. We had mine and Caroline's birthday, which obviously meant a weeklong celebration, my Dad's birthday, two weekend trips and some other fun stuff in between, so I only read two and a half books.

At the end of July, I had just started reading The Hurricane Sisters and I have loved anything and everything Dorthea Benton Frank I'd ever read, so I figured this book wouldn't be any different. I started out really into it, but about halfway in, it really just lost steam for me and I found it hard to finish. Lots of cliche's in the characters and not a lot of development, at least in my opinion. I mean, it wasn't a bad book, but it's not one I'd pick up and read again either.

I have loved all of Sarah Addison Allen's books that I've read and The Peach Keeper was no exception. She has this way of mixing the supernatural and ethereal with everyday that just really pulls you in. Most of her books take place in North Carolina or someplace in the South. You will not regret picking up one of her books.

I'm about 1/3 of the way into this book right now and so far I really like it. The One and Only chronicles how football is religion in one Texas college town. Emily Giffin's books usually end up really pissing me off at some point so I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop on this one. I think what makes me mad is that she takes her stories the direction that many real life occurrences go. I like things nice and tidy and tied up with a bow when I read ;) Just kidding, mostly. The one that comes to mind is The Heart of the Matter, which I think was her newest release before this one. I won't ruin it for anyone who hasn't read it, but I just found myself so frustrated practically the entire time I was reading. I guess that could be a mark of a good author; they get the reader invested enough in the stories and characters to really bring out emotions.

Anyway, those were my reads for last month. I've got some good ones waiting on my nightstand for September :) Leave me any good suggestions if you've read one you love lately!
